Horserace Betting Levy Board Veterinary Newsletter
The Horserace Betting Levy Board is a statutory body that was brought into being by the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Act 1963. The Levy Board is responsible for the collection of a levy on off-course horserace betting turnover from bookmakers and the Tote. The funds collected are applied to three statutory purposes:
* the improvement of breeds of horses
* the advancement or encouragement of veterinary science or veterinary education
* the improvement of horseracing
The Levy Board since its formation has become a major source of finance for racing. The organisation also owns the Horseracing Forensic Laboratory, authorises the National Joint Pitch Council and is responsible for the National Stud.
