Camvet-Seminar "The Healing Power of Food"

TCVM - Food Therapy for dogs and cats with Connie di Natale, DVM

The healing power of food is central to Chinese Medicine. Food therapy is often used alone or in conjunction with other modalities to treat disease patterns. We will learn to create individual diet plans for our four legged patients based on their age, species, geographical location, personality and current disharmony or disease process.

The ingredients of homemade diets are chosen based on their energetic properties like temperature and taste. Chinese food therapy recipes are developed according to TCVM theory of Yin-Yang, Five Elements, Eight Principles and Zang-Fu Physiology and Pathology. Homemade food can be used for daily health promotion, for disease treatment or as an adjunct therapy for diseases such as otitis, urinary crystals and stones, IBD, CHF, cancer, renal or liver failure.

The goal of food therapy is to restore and maintain balance in the body. However, the effects of food therapy are slower-acting than modalities like acupuncture and herbal medicine. If food ingredients are chosen correctly there are virtually no side effects, and can be used safely throughout a patient’s lifetime. Moreover, it is very popular amongst owners as it empowers them to take part in the therapy for their animals.
