(04.12.2016) Profit should never take priority over animal health and welfare and should never harm the consumer. This is the unambiguous message of the veterinary profession in Europe speaking out against the problems surrounding dog trade.
Last month the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE), the Federation of European Companion Animal Veterinary Associations (FECAVA) and the Union of European Veterinary Practitioners (UEVP), unanimously adopted the position paper "Working towards responsible dog trade in Europe - The position of the veterinary profession in Europe"
In its position paper, the veterinary profession voices its concern with the currently alarming situation regarding the dog trade industry in Europe.
They call upon all those involved to work towards a future in which dogs are traded in a respectful and responsible way taking into account the animals health and welfare needs.
The veterinary profession plays a key role in all aspects of dog trade, whether it is advising the breeder, carrying out border controls, counselling legislators and decision makers, educating clients, checking the dogs ID or caring for its health and welfare.
I am confident together we as a profession can make a difference! Ms. M. Megens, FECAVA Senior Vice-President, said.
