Liverpool vet wins UK's top equine award

A University of Liverpool vet has been honoured with the UK's most prestigious award in equine welfare.

Professor Derek Knottenbelt has been presented with the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) Welfare Award, sponsored by the Blue Cross, for his outstanding contribution to national and international equine medicine and welfare.

Professor Knottenbelt, who is currently Head of the Division of Equine Studies at the University's Large Animal Hospital, is credited with pioneering effective treatment for a number of diseases affecting horses including sarcoids and ragwort poisoning. As well as his clinical and academic roles, he is President of Wirral and Chester Riding for the Disabled and has authored six major veterinary textbooks on equine medicine.

Professor Knottenbelt said: "This award is a credit to the outstanding work that has been carried out by so many people in treating horses at the University's Philip Leverhulme Large Animal Hospital.

"I am honoured to receive the award but I would not have been able to work with horses on such a scale without the continued support of my colleagues in the Division of Equine Studies. This award is as much for them as for me.”
